An Eco-Friendly Project Breaking New Ground
Prioritizing eco-friendly initiatives, Mecho is proud to have partnered with Henning Larsen, an international design studio, to donate fixed shades for the KilmaKover prototype system located on New York's Governors Island. The KilmaKover prototype shelter, being a low energy scalable solution, utilizes radiant cooling technology to reduce heat stress exposure while saving energy. The cost-effective solution is intended to reduce the cost of AC and urban heat in populated areas including public and commercial spaces. Educating people about the future of urban cooling, the environmental impact of this project is immense.
Execution Backed by Science
The Thermal Architecture Lab that is led by Dorit Aviv, the assistant professor of architecture at the Weitzman School of Design, chose to compose a project that features the utilization of radiant cooling. The prototype contains insulated panels that house small tubes. The tubes circulate chilled water allowing the panels to absorb heat from the end user's body creating cool zones. As a result, a reduction of energy use and solar power leads to an empowered eco-friendly solution for urban heat. The pavilion is designed to promote sustainable tactics by housing open-air ventilation allowed by the open design of the shelter. Shading plays a significant role in the open- air ventilation design, allowing outdoor heat stress to be decreased dramatically. Additionally, the open-air ventilation adds a cost-effective element, decreasing overall material use and operational costs.
